"But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to the Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly." Matthew 6:6
EXCERPT FROM INTRODUCTION
The term "closet prayer" is a scriptural term. We find it in Matthew 6:6 "But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to the Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly."
The prayer closet is a place of many functions:
First, I find it to be a PLACE OF WORSHIP: By this I mean that we adore our heavenly Father. For the various name s of God speaks volumes to us. Jehovah-jireh "the Lord will provide", Jehovah-napha "the Lord that healeth". Jehovah-nissi, "the Lord our banner", Jehovah-Shalom "the Lord our peace", Jehovah-na-ah "the Lord our Shepherd", Jehovah-tsidkenu, "the Lord our Righteousness". By looking at the meaning of these names, I find great pleasure in worshipping that great name.
Secondly, I find the prayer closet to be a PLACE OF CONFESSION: You cannot go into the presence of a Holy God without seeing your own sinfulness. "Woe is me! For I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts." Isaiah 6:5. We need to be honest in the prayer closet.
