Closet Prayer Closet Prayer Journal
Introduction by Dr. Benny Beckum
"As we look at the local church today, we can see a great need for closet or private prayer.  From time to time, you may hear someone speaking of public or family prayer, but in the thirty-six years of my ministry, I cannot remember ever hearing anything about closet prayer in our churches.

About twenty years ago, I began to read some of the great Puritans writers. I noticed immediately why they were called Puritans, for their lives were so pure. Their lives were pure and holy because they practiced what our Lord taught in Matthew about the duty of closet prayer.

I pray that this booklet will encourage you to use your prayer closet to communicate honestly with your Father and learn how to leave all of your concerns with Him, then let go of them so that He can do His mighty work. I pray that this booklet will help you to change your life for the Lord.

If we are to see a great revival in America, we must return to this practice of going to our prayer closet honestly before the Lord and seeking His divine intervention. "
by Dr. Benny Beckum

"But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to the Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly." Matthew 6:6

EXCERPT FROM INTRODUCTION

The term "closet prayer" is a scriptural term. We find it in Matthew 6:6 "But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to the Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly."
The prayer closet is a place of many functions:

First, I find it to be a PLACE OF WORSHIP: By this I mean that we adore our heavenly Father. For the various name s of God speaks volumes to us. Jehovah-jireh "the Lord will provide", Jehovah-napha "the Lord that healeth". Jehovah-nissi, "the Lord our banner", Jehovah-Shalom "the Lord our peace", Jehovah-na-ah "the Lord our Shepherd", Jehovah-tsidkenu, "the Lord our Righteousness". By looking at the meaning of these names, I find great pleasure in worshipping that great name.

Secondly, I find the prayer closet to be a PLACE OF CONFESSION: You cannot go into the presence of a Holy God without seeing your own sinfulness. "Woe is me! For I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts." Isaiah 6:5. We need to be honest in the prayer closet.
