Description

The influence of the Great Awakening in America followed by the trail of the Separate Baptist Movement from Connecticut, through New York, into Virginia, then working with the Indians and on into North Carolina was filled with many trials, struggles and victories. These were all a part of the Baptist History and the great work established at Sandy Creek, North Carolina. Many churches launched in all directions from that church as Shubal Stearns traveled with the power of God on his life.

Prior to the Revolutionary War, taxes were very heavy and persecution of the Baptists was nearly unbearable. Many of them began to secretly migrate to the South Carolina back country or the hill country of North Carolina; a large group even went into Virginia, and later some went to Kentucky and Tennessee. the Virginia Baptists continued to suffer great persecution; however, with the help of Jefferson and Madison, they were able to largely influence the writing of the First Amendment to our Constitution.
